When Russia invaded Ukraine in March this year nearly every world leader stated publicly that they expected this to be a long war. The Ukrainians were vocal about protecting their sovereignty and pledged to defend every inch of their country. By mid-summer it became increasingly apparent that these predictions would be very accurate. Now the failure scenario evolves…All of Europe sources its natural gas supplies for industrial and home heating purposes from Russia. When Europe sided through NATO against Putin, WHY DID NO ONE REALIZE THAT RUSSIA WOULD WEAPONIZE ITS ENERGY SUPPLIES DURING THE WINTER? Where were the leaders who could have sought alternative sourcing? To make matters worse, Europe had been paying Russia nearly four times the cost of natural gas in the US. We have the shipping capacity to supply Europe at a much lower price than they were paying Russia. Why were they relying on an unstable dictatorship for their heating supplies even before the Ukraine situation? A loud red alarm should have alerted everyone that trouble was closing in. Now we hear stories of a bleak and cold Europe emerging. Where were all the leaders when this conflict was first suspected in January and February? All news outlets reported the massing of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border. Russia had already annexed the Crimean peninsula. Putin was trying to re-capture the old USSR boundaries and it was so obvious. Unfortunately US media cannot spotlight this failure because it embarrasses both Europe (our NATO allies) and our own planning geniuses. Did they really think Putin would play nice?
