To many people abortion is the most significant issue in the midterm elections. Generally speaking the Democrats favor returning to the Roe v. Wade days when a woman could exercise her right to an abortion–if she so chose. Republicans want to severely limit or eliminate entirely the right to an abortion with few–if any–exceptions. The basic error of misunderstanding these two sides is that they are NOT opposites. Having the right to an abortion is NOT the opposite of banning abortion. REQUIRING ABORTIONS IS THE OPPOSITE OF BANNING ABORTIONS. The GOP generally allows no exceptions for rape and incest and makes the decision for the woman that her health situation is irrelevant when she becomes pregnant. She must carry an unwanted child to full term and deliver. For a moment just consider the emotional strain that causes over a nine month period. Think about the 10 year girl in Ohio who was forced to go to another state to get an abortion. Under proposed GOP rules she would be required to deliver a child–regardless of the rape that caused her pregnancy. Even the Catholic church is struggling with the impact of this position by trying to set up child care programs after the birth. A second thought on this issue…we Americans tout our freedoms as recited in the Constitution. We have the freedom of speech, religion, assembly, property ownership and many other freedoms. But women (more than half our citizen population) is faced with losing a basic healthcare right–all at the hands of a male-dominated Congress. Does that sound consistent with our Constitution? The clueless Supreme Court actually used the absence of abortion as a stated freedom in the Constitution as a basis for punting on Roe v. Wade. Apparently they couldn’t think it through without documented guidance. This is especially troubling when a previous Supreme Court created a legitimate precedent by their Roe decision. It’s obvious that the GOP hopes to garner votes by its pro-life position. Make no mistake about…the GOP has no moral compass here–it’s all about getting elected. Remember that 10 year old Ohio girl when you vote. Can you really support someone who would force her small body to endure the pain of childbirth?
