Just when you were looking for heroes a new debacle surfaces. The Secret Service which had a front row seat to the January 6th event tampered with evidence requested by the House Committee. They deleted hundreds of texts and E mails that were generated immediately before, during and after the riot. They said it was a routine process that occurred about every 3 months. Was this bad management, poor communication or an attempt to cover up what they failed to do? We’ll never know but we should be able to take remedial steps to fix the problem. First, whoever ordered or failed to stop the deletion process should be fired. Second, any procedure in place to delete messages should be reviewed and adjusted to incorporate common sense. Third, the agents who were involved in the event–especially those near the president–must be subpoenaed to appear and give testimony under oath as to their witness. They should be threatened with aiding and abetting the overthrow attempt by covering up the sequence of events. Skillful interrogators should be able to find willing agents who want to preserve their jobs, reputations and pensions. The “Secret Service” is not supposed to keep these kinds of events secret. Their secrecy aspect is intended to defend the people who protect our way of life as opposed to protecting those people who threaten our democracy.
