The Catholic Church has again demonstrated its nearsightedness. The Archbishop in San Francisco has barred Nancy Pelosi from receiving Communion for doing her job to the best of her ability. You see the Catholic Church believes that elected politicians in a democracy must deviate from the wishes of the majority and support the Catholic Church whenever a conflict arises. Majority rule is a building block of all democracies and people are elected to support democratic principles. Hence the Pelosi support of pro-abortion legislation because the vast majority of Americans support some level of abortion. This is not to say that Ms. Pelosi personally supports abortion. She is simply doing her job within the democratic wishes of her constituents. We do not support abortion but we support–even applaud–Ms. Pelosi for standing up to her jobs requirements and voting for something she personally disdains. Permit an analogy: When Hitler attacked Europe every member of Congress backed FDR in his declaration of war. Do you think there were any Catholic members of Congress? What about the day after Pearl Harbor? Did Catholic members of Congress stand up and say “well, they were only kidding. Let’s not retaliate because it would cost lives and be a sin”. Obviously not the case but you didn’t hear the Church rail against the Catholic members of Congress. The majority of Americans are not of the Catholic faith. We live in a democracy and any elected official knows that he/she must represent majority views. A final note: President Biden is also a Catholic and he has discussed this issue with no less than the Pope. We wonder how the Archbishop can sanction Pelosi when the Pope did not bar Biden from Communion. Does rank really have its privileges?
