The recent Florida law–penned as “don’t say gay”–has our complete agreement. The law forbids schools to discuss sexual orientation with children under the age of 7. Bravo!!! How many kids do you know who need to know that kind of information? Can you hear six year old Susie say “why does Jimmy have two dads”? How often do kids actually notice that situation in their daily routine? And when they do notice and ask, who is the best adult to answer…their own parents, of course. Who knows the child better than the parent? who can tailor a difficult answer in the easiest to understand terms for their own child if not the parents? For the incredibly few number of times this issue will surface it makes absolutely no sense to make it a formal part of the kindergarten experience and grades 1 and 2 curriculum. Kids that age cannot understand gayness, don’t care about gayness, won’t encounter or suspect gayness for many years and have no concept of what implications gayness can include. To create awareness at this age is only going to confuse kids who are interested in Santa Claus, trips to Grandma’s house, the Easter Bunny and summer vacations. Our hats are off to Governor DeSantis and other governors who are willing to take this stand. Unfortunately the gay community is griping because they have been very successful in other rights of recognition lately. But forcing this awareness at this age is like teaching them about taxes, immigration rules, climate change and inflation. It’s miles over their comprehension levels and totally irrelevant at this time in their lives.
