Ok, by now we all know what happened. Will Smith assaulted Chris Rock. Here’s our “take” on why it happened. Spoiler: money. Last year’s Academy Awards show had the lowest rating ever. Clearly the pandemic and the absence of movie-goers weighed heavily on the interest factor. Who cares what movie wins “best picture” if you didn’t see any of them? How can you agree or disagree with “best actor” award if you stayed home last year? Networks and especially advertisers noticed all that and wanted to re-boot interest this year. The fashions were startling; the movies got some attention; much of the audience retuned to the theaters. But the money people (networks and advertisers) wanted to create something unforgettable for next year. So they decided to use the actor abilities of the participants in a memorable event that will bring ’em back next year. Sorry, it was all about $$$$$. Will Smith needs to be jailed for at least 90 days. If you did that to anyone on the street you’d be hauled off on assault charges. Have you heard of any such charges being filed? Then both Smith and Rock used the publicity to show remorse (a valued emotional display for actors) and perseverance (another wonderful actor trait) to their financial advantage. Remember Jussie Smollett? ANYTHING that gets you attention without killing you is good for your career. The old quote “There’s no such thing as bad publicity” says it all. Now you know….
