Another race story…perhaps but maybe not. Brian Flores was hired to produce a playoff contending football team. After 2 years in the Miami Dolphins Head Coaching job, he failed. And his second year record is worse than his first year record. Under these circumstances does the team owner not have the right to fire him and look for someone else to lead the team? The owner has a huge investment and he has every right to make changes that he thinks will protect and enhance his profits. For Mr. Flores to play the race card is a gross misstep strategically. His record will not support a racial argument. Now the Football Commissioner states that the football world does not have enough black coaches and vows to correct that. Sorry–that’s just an attempt to salve black wounds. If you look back over the last 10 years or so you’ll find that a number of black coaches have been given the opportunity to lead. The fact that right now–at this point in time–we have only one black coach says nothing about racial discrimination. It simply says that right now there are other (non-black) individuals who are better candidates for the Head Coaching jobs. To lobby for someone less qualified–but black–to become a Head Coach is to invite disaster. When people are elevated to jobs they are not ready for–they usually fail. And that is the real tragedy. When and if a black person is put into any role he/she is not fully ready to assume and fails it only reinforces the notion that black people are incompetent. The fact that 70% of football players are minorities clearly shows that team owners are serious about putting the best candidates in key jobs–REGARDLESS OF COLOR. So Mr. Flores, your argument falls flat. All you have done now is alert the other team owners that you could be a serious disruption to the morale of their team…and no one wants that or you.
