As we plan to celebrate another Christmas (with apologies to non-believers), it would be easy to focus on all the negatives this world faces and fear whatever is in-store for us in 2022 and beyond. But–and this is a BIG BUT–Christmas has always meant time-out for family, friends and “everyone you meet” (like the song says). If we ever needed to step back, take a deep breath and smile—Christmas 2021 is the time. Last year our family celebrated in our backyard in 50 degree weather as we exchanged gifts. This year we will gather in 72 degree warmth in our Family Room. That alone is worth a smile. But this year we need more…more respect for ourselves and others…more compassion for those less fortunate…more forgiveness for those who see things differently than we do…more understanding for those who choose a different lifestyle…more tolerance for diversity in all its forms. And–most importantly–we need all those feelings to become part of our permanent outlook. Imagine–if you will–how different the world would be if we all worked together without envy, fear, anger, greed, selfishness, arrogance or any of the other barriers that keep us from being the best version of ourselves. Maybe we would have conquered cancer years ago or already have a colony on Mars. Of course, the devil is in the details–as they say. Our free will is a two edged sword. It allows us to be creative and productive but it also allows us to disagree without remorse or adjustment. So–what’s the answer? Sadly, there is no one answer. The same childish attitudes we grew up with have never been outgrown. We still harbor basic selfish thoughts that cripple us and turn inward and away from “the other person”. Maybe the lessons of childhood can teach us where to begin the healing and turn outward. Someone needs to take that first step. Permit us an old story about heaven and hell. Both are depicted as large banquet tables filled with delicious foods. The only rule is that all diners must use utensils. But the utensils have three foot long handles. While the diners in Hell starve because they cannot figure out how to manage three foot long forks and knives, the diners in Heaven are well-fed and happy. They realized how to feed each other across the table. As you celebrate Christmas this year open your mind and heart to others. Maybe this attitude adjustment will become the next pandemic. Wouldn’t that be special? Merry Christmas and have a safe and Happy New Year!!
