Consistent with the Church’s teaching that all life is sacred and comes from God, it opposes abortion unless the life of the mother’s life is threatened during pregnancy and/or delivery. By taking this position the Church seems to be saying that–if there needs to be a choice between the life of the unborn and the already born(mother)–the life of the mother may be prioritized. Detectable heartbeat is the generally accepted standard for the beginning of the existence of life. But then the Church goes further by condemning artificial birth control measures like pills and intra-uterine devices which prevent egg fertilization. Note: these measures DO NOT KILL THE FETUS. They simply prevent conception. Therein lies a huge difference in our view. Just as the mother in a threatened pregnancy is prioritized we believe parents should be able to determine when a pregnancy is appropriate in their lives by using artificial means. If the Church is to allow the mother to be saved during a dangerous situation why doesn’t the Church allow parents to determine when they can appropriately accept a child into their loving family? A loving family should be able to decide when they can provide best for the welfare of a child; as opposed to a surprise pregnancy that results in emotional and financial difficulty for the family. As in any situation, the morality, ethical conduct and prudent judgment of the individuals should be the focus. Bad fruit cannot come from a good tree. If honest loving couples believe they need to delay the start of a family they should have every right to make that choice free of guilt. They’re not killing a fetus; they’re making a conscious decision to choose the appropriate timing of having a family. No one should dispute or interfere with that right. And we believe that God would support that approach.
