We attend several soccer games each year and are constantly amazed at the energy, agility and determination of the players. We’ve never seen any “give-up” in any player—regardless of the score. But for us the repeated frustration lies with the Officials and the rules as they are interpreted. Most games are closely contested and penalty kicks often decide the victor. So it is critical that the Official make accurate and unbiased calls on a consistent basis. We think the problems are many with soccer. First there aren’t enough officials at prep games…we understand that’s an economic reality. Second, the infractions called seem inconsistent because not enough eyes actually saw what transpired. Third, the quality of the official seems lacking in many cases. So you say “so what”? The youngsters who play these sports are growing attitudes and values as they participate in sports. They are taught to play by the rules. But when they see repeated failures by officials it is impossible not to become “jaded”. The reaction is at least skeptical about fairness and possibly even leaning to biased calls. We suggest a general tightening up of soccer rules, better training for officials, more oversight of officials performance and an increase of on-field officials by adding one more to the field of play. Give the players fair and consistent calls; they’ll grow up better people knowing they won or lost on an even playing field.
