Usually we like to start each posting update with a smile. But today we offer some not-so-well known information.
Hope you find these worth your time…
- All Major League ballparks are designed so that the hitter faces east. Games are almost never scheduled in the morning so a batter will never be expected to face a 100 mile-per-hour fastball while being blinded by the sun. Coincidentally, a left-handed pitcher will always be throwing from the south side of the field—and hence we have the term “southpaw”. Don’t ask us why a right-handed pitcher isn’t called a north-paw!!!
- The term “sucker” is coined after a fish of the same name. It will swallow almost any kind of bait–just like it’s human counterpart. A sucker will believe anything you say.
- In 1914 the English developed two dirigible-type airship prototypes, A-blimp and B-blimp. The “A” version failed and the “b” version successfully passed all tests. The “B-limp” became–over time–blimp. The “limp” word was used to reflect the slowness of the craft—said to “limp” along. Now you know…
- Where did the expression “April Fool’s Day” start? Answer: In the Middle Ages April 1st was considered the first day of the new year. In later years the date was changed to the present January 1st but many people resisted the change and continued to observe April 1st as the beginning of the new year. The rest of the world mocked that resistance and began calling them “April Fools”.
- Why do we use the expression “Happy as a clam”? It seems that clams are so immune to their surroundings that they simply want to be left alone–needing no one and nothing to be content.
