The decision to hold the Tokyo Olympic games this year are a strong testament to the power of the advertising dollar. TV networks are counting on big bucks and refuse to allow any common sense to play into the picture. Never mind the rampant COVID situation in Japan; never mind the lack of spectators whose physical presence is highly valued by the athletes; never mind the close contact in all competitions and the obvious spread concerns; never mind the potential for life threatening illness or residual physical issues; never mind the financial loss for the sickened competitor whose residual symptoms destroy his/her earning power; and never mind that all these athletes will be returning home from a country that has a super high rate of contagion–thereby increasing the world-wide spread potential. If you can set all those concerns aside and watch these young men and women risk their future simply to fill the networks pockets with ad money….then you must agree with the decision that profits come first and everything else is irrelevant. In times like these it is impossible to hide the ugly reality that money drives all actions; and that’s what separates us from our past. Many decision-makers have devolved into an uncaring society whose greed can and will destroy others without feeling guilty–the classic definition of a sociopath.
