While all the noise is about the significance of the conviction there remains a huge challenge in it’s aftermath. All elements of police recruiting, policy review, training methods and communication processes need a thorough evaluation. If we are to systematically eliminate the George Floyd case from ever happening again we need to change the chain of events that lead up to a police officer kneeling on a man’s neck (white or black). There can never be a situation where any police officer feels “safe” doing what Derek Chauvin did. Unless major changes are accomplished-starting now- we will see more people treated violently and being killed. The trauma to these families is unsettling. If for only economic reasons, each community should embrace changes. It is far less expensive to do it right than to pay the consequences in riot control, property damage and compensatory costs to the family. But costs notwithstanding, we need to step up and do the right thing.
