The time to address this issue intelligently is way past due. Currently most religions consider the gay community to be living in sin. Even the Pope, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has confused his own flock by suggesting that all people are acceptable to God but then disavowing same-sex unions. We get it but we don’t agree. All Christians believe that God has a role in all new life–hence the opposition to abortion. As such, God doesn’t make mistakes and therefore, gay people are part of His divine plan. If “gayness” is no different than hair or eye color, height or any other physical trait and if people obviously do not face discrimination for features they are born with, how can we say that God made a mistake by creating “gayness”? If being gay is not a choice then it is reasoned that gay individuals should not be criticized for it any more than for their height. It follows then that all gays have the same rights and privileges available to “straight” people. And that includes the right to marital unions–sanctioned not only by our government but also by all faiths. To deny a child of God the same status is to demote that person to the slave status we supported in the pre-Civil War days. Get over it, America. You can’t endorse a religion that enslaves people for their genetic make-up. The notion that gayness is a choice needs to be corrected and the sooner–the better. Religion should embrace all God’s children.
