The recent auto accident involving golfer Tiger Woods is played out daily in all media. Arguably the greatest golfer of all time, he lies in a hospital room with his golfing future in doubt. As sad as that story is, it reminds me that many people are unfazed by his situation because of his history of personal “misadventures”. His well-publicized failed marriage, his admitted sexual addiction, prior traffic citations—all have prompted some to condemn him and write him off as something of an “undesirable”. That attitude is totally inappropriate.

Tiger Woods is a human being with all the same rights as you and me. One of those rights is privacy. I watch Tiger play golf because I admire his ability and not because I admire him for any other characteristic. His life off the course is his business. The trade-off is the role model that any celebrity displays by the very nature of their celebrity. Fact: Tiger and every other recognized celebrity lives his/her life in a department store window on full display. So it’s important to adjust our attitude when attempting to justify the judging of the whole person. How do you think you would fare if the not-so-glorious moments of your life played out on the world stage? Even the Bible says “let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone”. Any takers??
