I continue to be amazed that people are shocked when another school act of violence plays out. What do you folks expect? Everywhere we look life is cheapened by violent videos, increasingly explosive movies, prime time TV that reaches beyond acceptable limits to sell product, etc. Yeah, I know “another bleeding heart liberal speaks out”. The problem is: violence sells—but it finds it most receptive audience among the younger members of our society. The subconscious message: sudden and horrible death carries a “no big deal” tag. These entertainment outlets do not recognize death as traumatic or view the destructive impact on families, lives disrupted, etc. Is it really neat to see someone cleverly executed?
It’s time for a cool-headed dialogue where players and owners agree on a way to register protest without disrupting the industry they all work in. I would suggest that either of these approaches might work: ask all players to stand for the Anthem but allow those who choose to show their protest to glance downward. This would suggest support for the country but disdain for some in authority. The other thought is to allow protesting players to remain in the runway during the Anthem. Their mere absence will send a message of protest to all present and those watching on TV. Empty sidelines will demonstrate their feelings.
Regarding, “Thousands of US kindergartners unvaccinated without waivers” (May 29): The article reveals a major problem in our culture. When adults fail to vaccinate their children against preventable and contagious diseases, they expose the entire population to epidemic outbreaks. Consider the current measles problem.
