The front page article “We believe in dinosaurs” is bound to resurrect (pardon the religious term) the old debate about “answers in Genesis” and evolution. The key here is that both positions are theories. As theories most rational people recognize that neither position can be irrefutably proven. That’s why they call them “theories”. But, before we get too far into the battle over who’s more right than the other, let’s consider this potential solution.
Darwinians will state that we evolved over millions of years from a tiny single cell “animal” that crawled out of the ocean. Creationists will quote the seven days it supposedly took to create the earth. First, as we measure a day as 24 hours, it’s impossible to take the Bible’s account literally. Second it’s difficult to imagine a systematic and dynamic transition from a single cell creature to the modern human race without asking “where did that first single cell come from?”
So let’s “theorize”. What if the Bibles “days” were millions of years long and an unnamed entity created the first single cell? Could we not consider a degree of compatibility then between the Darwin “theory” and the Genesis “theory”? Remember no one was around to record these events.
I’m sure some readers will passionately disagree. Some will take Genesis literally and others will say the Bible is a joke played by some ancient author. But for many of us, realizing at least the possibility of a connection in these “theories” may allow for the acceptance of both viewpoints. I don’t know how all this world was created and neither do you. So theories will and should always leave room for debate. But maybe, especially in today’s political climate, an open mind and willingness to listen to another point of view would go a long way to reconciling differing opinions. And that can’t be all bad.
