Regarding the recent article “Death Penalty is Purely Evil”, I am a life-long practicing Catholic and I disagree with Sister Koverman’s position completely. True, the Bible says “Thou shalt not kill”; but it also says “an eye for an eye”. Which phrase you judge as a your own position is a matter of personal preference.  Practically speaking humans do justifiably kill. Have you heard of World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, etc. Where would the world be today if we followed the “no kill” policy in the face of the Hitler threat? And what about self-defense…are we saying it’s more right to watch some low-life murder our family than to KILL him? Of course not. No sane human being would take that position.

While I sometimes disagree with Mr. Deters, this is a definite point of agreement. In a perfect world, humans do not kill other humans. Falling woefully short of that standard, we need to adopt rules that serve the public masses even if that negatively impacts an individual’s right to life. Some people are simply a menace to society and preserving their life by permanent imprisonment is not a solution…it is the most inhumane torture they could face. I’m sorry Sister. The big and practical picture is that just as in war and self-defense situations, capital punishment is the right solution to protect society. And quoting what priests say does not strengthen your argument. When guilt is thoroughly verified, the state has a duty to end the threat to the welfare of its citizens.
